Tracking with GPS
By far the most common form of tracking is by using GPS. That is, tracking using the 24 US Global Positioning Satellites that orbit the Earth. This is by far the most accurate form of tracking and probably the one that everyone thinks of when you mention "tracking".
This type of tracking is superb for larger assets such as cars and boats etc, but not so good for smaller assets and people, as those particular assets tend to end up inside of buildings during a large percentage of their time. However, if your asset is mainly out in the open, with a clear view of the sky, then night or day, GPS tracking is the best solution for you.
But in order for the GPS systems to work, they must have a form of communication built into them also. ie a GSM modem (the working part of mobile phone!).
Without this, the device itself will know where it is, but no one else will!
Do not be confused with other GPS devices such as those made by Garmin and Navman as these are mainly "navigation" devices and are designed to assist the wearer or owner to move from one point to another. They are NOT classed as tracking products and care should be taken when comparing other GPS devices.
Also, there are GPS devices out there called "loggers" (see Smartstick for example). These simply log their positions as they go and then allow you to download them to a PC when the asset has returned home. Again, these are sometimes referred to as 'tracking devices' but they are not going to be of any benefit to you if your asset is stolen.
But whichever GPS product that you intend to operate, with accuracy down to as little as 3ft (1m) its as good as it gets for most assets.
